The predecessor of Underwater Acoustic Engineering College was the first Sonar major in China, established in 1953 under the Department of Naval Force Engineering, PLA Military Engineering Institute. As one of the first batch of talent cultivation units of master, doctor and post-doctoral researchers in reform and opening-up, its underwater acoustic engineering is listed in the first batch of national key subjects in China, and ranked first in the previous Discipline Ranking of the Ministry of Education. It is the cradle to cultivate high-level underwater acoustic talents in China, and the source of new theories, technologies and methods of underwater acoustic technology. Underwater Acoustic Engineering have derived master's and doctoral disciplines such as Acoustics, Signal and Information Processing, Communication and Information Systems, with the National Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology as one of the first batch of national key laboratories, making UAEC one of the most representative teaching and research institutions of the characteristic “shipbuilding industry, naval equipment, marine development, nuclear energy application” in Harbin Engineering University.


  • 1953: Sonar major, Department of Naval Force Engineering, PLA Military Engineering Institute.

  • 1961: Academician Yang Shie set up the Underwater Acoustic Engineering College.

  • 1987: Identified as a National Key Discipline by Ministry of Education.

  • 1994: China 's first large-scale acoustic deep-sea research conducted by Academician Yang Shie achieved a great success.

  • 1994: National Defense Science and Technology Commission approved the construction plan of the Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology.

  • 2001: The Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology was officially designated as a national key laboratory by the State Council.

  • 2010: The new Underwater Acoustic Building and Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology completed.

  • 2015: Approved national experimental teaching demonstration center of Underwater Acoustic Engineering.

  • 2015: Qingdao Ocean Information Science and Technology Research Center (Phase I) put into construction.

  • 2016: Received the National Defense Technology Innovation Team Award for Underwater Acoustic Engineering.

Discipline and Specialty

With the construction of national defense and development and utilization of ocean, the major Underwater Acoustic Engineering has strategic and economic significance for national defense construction and marine development. Currently, acoustic wave is the only effective information carrier in the ocean for remote information transmission and target detection. Sonar is an important equipment for acquiring and transmitting ocean acoustic information using underwater acoustic technology. Underwater Acoustic Engineering studies relevant theory and technology on detecting targets with underwater acoustic wave, recognizing, locating and tracking information transmission and access, endowing with a distinctive feature of the industry and multiple disciplines, involving professional knowledge of marine engineering, marine physics, mathematics, acoustics, electronics and information technology, information and communication engineering, and computer science and technology.

There are two doctorate degree authorizations, 5 master degree authorizations, two undergraduate majors, and two Post-doctorate R&D Bases (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering&Information and Communication Engineering) in Underwater Acoustic Engineering College. Underwater Acoustic Engineering is a key discipline of China; Communication and Information Systems is a national defense specialty; Acoustics, Signal and Information Processing are key disciplines of Heilongjiang Province; Electronic Information Engineering (Underwater Acoustics) is specialized in national defense and provincial key construction; and Underwater Acoustic Engineering is one of the provincial key construction majors. In addition, there are a National Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology and a national experimental teaching demonstration center of Underwater Acoustic Engineering experimental teaching center.

There are 102 full-time teachers in the school of underwater sound engineering, including 32 doctoral supervisors, 80 master supervisors, 83.3 percent of full-time teachers with doctoral degrees, and 35 part-time professors at home and abroad. Among full-time teachers, there are two academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, three people enjoying special government allowances of the state council, one national outstanding teachers, one "scientific Chinese of the year", one “Outstanding Talents in the Century” from the Ministry of Education, two 511 talent engineering academic leaders” of Defence Science&Technology Industry, two national excellent science and technology workers, one "Advanced Worker" of Defence Science&Technology Industry, one young of outstanding contributions of Defence Science&Technology Industry, one outstanding young teacher of higher education in China, two Longjiang Scholars distinguished professors, one Distinguished Young Scholars of Heolongjiang Province, two excellent young and middle-aged experts of Heolongjiang Province, one teaching master of Heolongjiang Province, two outstanding graduate supervisors of Heolongjiang Province, two prizewinners of Heilongjiang Youth Science and Technology Award, and 3 people selected by Heilongjiang University Youth Academic Backbone Support Plan.

The Underwater Acoustic Engineering College owns a innovation team of the Ministry of Education , a innovation team of Defence Science&Technology Industry, a provincial leading talent echelon, three  outstanding graduate student tutor contingents of Heolongjiang Province and a provincial teaching team. It has a national resource sharing course, a national video open course and a brand course of English teaching under the Ministry of Education. UAEC has published more than 40 academic books and textbooks  to fill in the academic monograph of China's underwater acoustic engineering. In recent three years, UAEC has won the "National Defense Science and Technology Innovation Team Award", a “National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, a second prize of National Technological Invention, a Science and Technology Progress Award of THE HO LEUNG HO LEE FUNNDATION, and 12 province science and technology prizes including National Defense Science and Technology Progress Prize, Marine Engineering Science and Technology Awards and Science and Technology Award in Heilongjiang Province. In 2016, there were 128 research projects and 0.94 billion yuan in research funds.

Personnel Training

The Underwater Acoustic Engineering College aims to cultivate innovative talents with international vision and positive attitude, adhering to the modern education concept "research-guided, student-centered, teacher-led" and the motto "quality, action and research". UAEC has established good training and cooperative research relationships with many foreign universities and research institutes from the United States, Russia, France, Canada, Belgium, South Korea, Norway and Ukraine. In 2015, Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) joint training doctoral project was approved International Cooperative Training Program for innovative talents of China Scholarship Council, then Le Mans University (France) and Auckland University (New Zealand) were approved the National Excellent Undergraduate Joint Project. Since 2013, the college has sent 14 teachers to foreign universities to do a visiting scholar, jointly trained 59 students with foreign universities and supported 133 teachers and students to participate in high-level international conferences. We have successfully hosted the 5th "International Symposium on Acoustic Engineering and Technology" and a "COA 2016 International Symposium on Ocean Acoustics", which has high reputation and significant influence on the field of international underwater acoustic technology.

Over the years, nearly 80% of the graduates work in the underwater acoustic engineering or related fields, praised by employers for their solid theoretical foundation, practical ability, adaptability, stamina and other qualities. Nearly 60% of the high-level leadership and main figures in the field of underwater acoustics graduated from UAEC. College graduates have won five national excellent doctoral thesis and nomination awards. Now, there are 107 doctoral students, 417 graduate students and 744 undergraduates. In the past five years, the employment rate of graduate students is 100%. Graduates mainly work in underwater acoustic industry, marine, aerospace, aviation, electronics and other research institutes, naval technology management departments, large domestic and foreign communications companies, IT companies, or well-known universities at home and abroad.

In order to further promote the sustainable development of underwater sound education and attract more outstanding students to join this career, UAEC set up an Underwater Educational Fund in August 2010, aiming to award excellent undergraduate, outstanding undergraduates, postgraduates source and master-doctor continuous postgraduates from the college. Up to now, the Underwater Educational Fund has received a donation of 3.48 million yuan from 19 enterprises and institutions of all the country.

After the long-term development and construction, the UAEC has now established a full-fledged education system for producing undergraduates, postgraduates on master's and doctoral programs and post-doctoral researchers, with a comprehensive development of engineering and science, meeting the national marine industry on the underwater acoustic engineering at different levels of talent needs.
